Martine Moore was born in Bordeaux. Formerly based in London (BA (hons) Fine Arts painting, from Central Saint Martins) and initially working with oil on canvas in her studio in London’s East End, she moved to Cologne, Germany in 1999 and then to Arles, France in 2006. More recently, in 2020, she moved to the South coast of England.
Her work has been exhibited by The Alternative Arts Summer Show 1993, Art for Mayfair 1994 and several of her large paintings are in private collections including The London Institute (UAL), Alan Gibbins, Dover Street. London, and the Wasserhess family collection, Germany.
In March 1998, in London, a solo show of new works exhibits a series of nine triptychs each made up of three, four foot square panels of oil on linen. Collectively entitled “The Chymical Wedding”, they explore transformations of material firstly on the surface, by the use of resins, glazes and chemicals which create skin-like textures and pockets and secondly, by going into the depths of the paintings with an alchemical vision of the inter-relatedness of the cosmos with the microscopic, of galaxies and nerve endings.
From 1999 to 2006, producing most of her work in Germany, the paintings evolve with a greater layering of complexity, yet with more transparency and at times a near monochromatic palette. Each work takes between three and six months to complete. May 2001 in Cologne, sees an exhibition of seven carefully selected paintings from the new series. All the work emerging throughout the Cologne years shares an identical format of 150 square centimetres (approximately 59 x 59 inches).
From 2006 to 2020, at her studio in Arles, she produced a further series of abstract, cloud-filled, many-layered paintings intentionally constrained by the square format of either one, or one and a half square metres. Currently, she is working in her new studio in St Leonards, UK.
